  1.  INSTALLATION
  2.  ~~~~~~~~~~~~
  3.  TERMINATOR 2 is a brand new program - so you MUST start afresh with
  4.  a new directory structure separate, distinct and apart from any old
  5.  directory structure in which obsolete versions or files of this (or,
  6.  of course, other programs) may already exist.
  7.  
  8.  TERMINATOR 2 is my trademark. It's important that you always write
  9.  it in capitals and always with an arabic (as opposed to Roman)
  10.  numeral `2'. I would prefer it if you use the full TERMINATOR 2 name
  11.  the first time you write it and then, subsequently, it may abreviated
  12.  to `T2'
  13.  
  14.  The letter versions of TERMINATOR 2 - this one is `a' - may contain
  15.  very significant new features and bug fixes so that is why I have
  16.  changed the distribution archive naming scheme:
  17.  
  18.  I would very much prefer it if you distribute my original PKware ZIP
  19.  TERMINATOR 2 archives intact and with exactly the same 0204T2A?.ZIP
  20.  names since my authenticity verification (# jru603 -AV) will then be
  21.  preserved.

  23.  If you *must* re-archive my distribution archives, then please,
  24.  please, *DO* keep the generic file naming scheme of 0204T2An.* (where
  25.  n is the archive part number and * stands for the appropriate archive
  26.  extension eg: ZIP, RAR, LHA, ARJ, ARC, ZOO, SQZ, etc)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. At the Operating System prompt, enter: INSTALL
  33.  
  34. (TERMINATOR 2 is WARP aware and should automatically detect the OS/2
  35. environment if you have OS2COMSPEC set and act accordingly)

  43. After a successful installation, enter:         T.BAT
  44. and the first time the program runs it will attempt an intelligent
  45. configuration.
  46.  
  47. For people who don't know much about serial communication and modems:
  48. - don't worry about all the options!
  49.  
  50. IMPORTANT: If you don't understand a toggle or option do not change it
  51.            - just leave it as it is. The options have already been set
  52.            to give the best performance for the majority.

  56. All options have been set as sensible defaults for normal use, and
  57. there is no immediate need to change much - although you may need to
  58. set up the following things if the intelligent configuration failed
  59. or you aborted it:
  60.  
  61. Port Parameters:-
  62. To change these, press [Alt] and [P] simultaneously from the Terminal
  63. window.
  64. After you have made your changes, hit "OK" for a temporary change for
  65. that session only, or "Update" to permanently write the changes in
  66. your configuration.

  68. If you have a faster modem than 2400 bps, you should set your bps rate
  69. to 19200 or 38400 or even faster (see below).
  70.  
  71. Fast modems can use data compression and if you only use 9600, you
  72. will not be making the best of the hardware you possess for fast
  73. transfers since your low port speed will act as a bottleneck.
  74.  
  75. Normally, for most BBS use, you use 8 databits, no parity, 1 stopbit.
  76.  
  77. If you DO have a slow modem and are using 2400 or slower, you should
  78. disable Hardware RTS/CTS flowcontrol in the "Change Configuration,
  79. Communication Setup" menu.
  80.  
  81. 9600bps and faster modems use Hardware RTS/CTS flowcontrol, which is a
  82. safer way of sending data when using a comport at 19200 or above.
  83. (Don't ever run 57600 bps or faster on external modems, unless you are
  84. sure that your cable is protected from noise - try 38400 first.)
  85.  
  86. Remember you must also set RTS/CTS flowcontrol in your modem - look in
  87. the modem manual. RTS/CTS flowcontrol requires an internal modem OR an
  88. external modem AND a proper modem cable which has the RTS and CTS
  89. (Request to send/Clear to send) pins connected.

  91. "Dialling and modem" configuration menu:-
  92. If you did not allow the program to install a modem from the pick
  93. list at first installation, you might choose "Install modem" from
  94. this menu now.
  95.  
  96. If your modem does not feature in the pick list of modems, you must
  97. set the following things manually - or at least check if they work
  98. (Look in your modem manual to check for further details. Remember
  99. factory defaults on your modem may mean you won't have to change
  100. anything...):

  102. Carrier Detect (CD) follows line (usually &C1)
  103.  
  104. Type AT&C1 and press enter
  105.  
  106. When DTR is low, line must be dropped, (Usually &D2 or &D3)
  107.  
  108. Type AT&D2 and press enter
  109.  
  110. Not all modems like this, if you can't hangup your modem, move to the
  111. "Modem & dialling" menu and Enter a 0 at the hang-up options which
  112. will allow TERMINATOR 2 to send a hangup string to your modem instead.
  113.  
  114. Type ATS0=0
  115. Then your modem will not pick up the phone - leaving TERMINATOR 2 to
  116. make the decision.
  117.  
  118. If you can save your setup in your modem, type AT&W, otherwise you
  119. must use the initstring which combines these various commands:
  120. AT&C1&D2S0=0^M
  121.  
  122. If your modem string is not sent because the carrier is high when you
  123. start up TERMINATOR 2, you should use the switch "Force init string"
  124. in the "Dialling and modem" menu..
  125.  
  126. If your modem is a normal Hayes compatible you don't need to set up
  127. anything else, everything has been set up already.

  131. Now you should be ready to press [Alt][D] for the phonebook and call
  132. some of the great BBS's listed there - or make some entries of your
  133. own...
